Kanchana SLN Music Academy trust has a history of nearly 100 years and is the oldest organization for music to originate in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

In the early 1930s, a Veena artist and Leg harmonium player named Smt. Kanchana Anandalakshmi Ammal started a music institute – Sree Lakshminarayana school of music and Arts in Mangalore, Karnataka. The institution brought forth astounding performances and special trainings by the all time legends - Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, G N Balasubramaniam, Chakrakodi Narayana Shastri and such others benefitting hundreds of people. Later in 1940s, the institution functioned in Chennai and was blessed by the guidance, teachings and performances of great luminaries such as Piteelu Chowdaiyyah, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar etc.

The first disciple of this institute – Anandalakshmi Ammal's son – Kanchana Venkatasubramaniam, an incredible vocalist and composer, was led and inspired by his mother's services and then dedicated his life to propagate music in not just cities but mainly in rural villages. Among his many land ownerships, he chose the remotest village called Bajathur in Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka to build a music school facility. During 1950s he transformed the institute into a Gurukul system music school that provided free music lessons, free accommodation, free food, clothing, medicine and basic amenities. Trainings were provided on vocal, violin, flute, mridangam, ghata, nagaswara and veena. During those years, this gurukul housed more than 150 music pupils (from many parts of south India) who were learning, graduating under its excellent curriculum. People of all religions, castes and genders were always treated equally and accepted equally in the institute. Many disciples of this institute are now well known artists and teachers.

Under the guidance of Kanchana Venkatasubramaniam and his son Kanchana Subbarathnam (great violinist, composer, vocalist, polymath and teacher) the institute not only spread classical music, but also worked strenuously towards betterment of music rendition in local folk arts such as Yakshagana Bhagavathike, Taala Maddale etc. Separate music training was given to Yakshagana singers and well-known Yakshagana artists such as Damodara Mandechcha. This marked the onset of a new classical era itself in Yakshagana Bhagavathike. The institution was ever active with monthly stage practice concerts for students, annual day celebrations of many prominent Carnatic music composers (Thyagaraja, Dikshitar, Shyama shastri, Purandara dasa etc.) and several frequent music projects involving great music legends.

The trust founders also opened free general education primary and high schools for the benefit of gurukul pupils and surrounding villagers.

In 1954, the institution was registered and recognized by the government. The institution's growth and its founders' relentless efforts towards holistic development brought electricity, telephone, post office, government bus transportation and tar road etc to the then forest like remote village - Bajathur. The village soon got identified with the name 'Kanchana' and was appreciated by legends like Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Violin T Chowdiah, Prof P. Sambamoorthi and such others as "Thiruvayyur of Karnataka".
